No. 78- VAT THIPEDI INSCRIPTION OF ISHANAVARMAN II DATED 832

Vat Thipedi (adhipati) is the name of a small temple in the district of Siam Reap.

The inscription is written in Sanskrit and contains 19 Shlokas. After invocation  to Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma and Uma (1-5), it contains an eulogy of king Yashovarman (who ascended the throne in 811 Saka) and of his two sons Harshavarman I and Ishanavarman II (6-12). These three kings highly honoured a learned ascetic named Shikhasiva whose learning and virtues are described in verses 13-16, and whose religious endowments are recorded in the next three verses. These were:

  1. The construction of the temple (on which the inscription is engraved) in the year 832;
  2. The installation of three lingas of Shiva on mount Bhadragiri
  3. The installation of three lingas close to Yashodharatataka, referred to in Nos. 62-65 and identified with Eastern Baray.

A line in Khmer, written on the margin of the Sanskrit inscription, records that in 834 Saka Mratan Sanvarna of Bhavapura made  a donation of some lands to god Shivalinga.

The Sanskrit inscription has a style of its own, of which the chief characteristics are the use of long compounds, Atyukti, i.e exaggeration, and Anuprashna, i.e, the repetition of the same syallables in the same line. These, according to Sanskrit rhetoricians, are the marks of the Gauda style, and Coedes thinks that the author of the inscription was probably trained in the Gauda country. The inscription thus furnishes an evidence of the continuity of relation between India and Kambuja.
